CAS Pathway & Guide

Welcome to the study library. Here you will find comprehensive math-centered notes, formulations, and exam prep outlines modeled precisely on the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) requirements.

Phase 1

Preliminary Foundations

The journey begins with preliminary examinations testing underlying mathematical disciplines.

  • Exam P (Probability): Mathematical probability, continuous distributions, risk analysis.
  • Exam FM (Financial Mathematics): Interest theory, loans, bonds, cash flows, and portfolios.
  • VEE (Validation by Educational Experience): University course credits in Economics, Accounting & Corporate Finance, and Mathematical Statistics.
Phase 2

Statistics & Actuarial Modeling

Intermediate modeling exams covering advanced predictive statistics and time-series processes.

  • Exam MAS-I (Modern Actuarial Statistics I): Linear models, regression, time series, and life contingency mathematics.
  • Exam MAS-II (Modern Actuarial Statistics II): Linear mixed models, credibility theory, Bayesian statistics, statistical learning.
Phase 3

P&C Practice Fundamentals

Developing the practical competencies central to pricing and reserving property & casualty portfolios.

  • Exam 5 (Basic Ratemaking & Loss Reserving): Primary core of actuarial science. Reserving estimates liabilities for future claims, while ratemaking computes necessary premiums.
  • Online Courses 1 & 2: Insurance Operations, Regulation, Risk Control, and Insurance Accounting.
  • PCPA (Predictive Analytics Exam): Evaluates competency using predictive models to solve business problems.
Phase 4

Regulation & Professionalism

The final steps towards credentialing emphasize local standards and ethical conduct.

  • Exam 6 (Regulation & Financial Reporting): Nation-specific regulatory frameworks, tax accounting, solvency monitoring (e.g. US, Canada, Taipei).
  • Course on Professionalism (COP): Interactive case study seminar on actuarial ethics and code of conduct.
ASSOCIATESHIP MILESTONE

Associate of the CAS (ACAS)

Fulfilling the Course on Professionalism and Exams 1–6 grants the ACAS credential. Associates are qualified to sign standard actuarial opinions and represent the society professionally.

Phase 5

Advanced Risk & Portfolio Strategy

Graduate-level exams covering highly advanced models, enterprise risk management, and capital optimization.

  • Exam 7 (Advanced Claims Liabilities): Stochastic reserving models, risk assessment, reserve variability.
  • Exam 8 (Advanced Pricing Techniques): Individual risk rating, experience rating, retrospective rating, and catastrophe pricing.
  • Exam 9 (Financial Risk & Rate of Return): Capital allocation, asset-liability matching, risk-adjusted rate of return, corporate finance.
FELLOWSHIP MILESTONE

Fellow of the CAS (FCAS)

Fulfilling all 9 exams and intermediate requirements grants the highest credential: Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS). Fellows possess full underwriting and strategy authority on multi-million dollar portfolios and shape the actuarial industry.
